Old media and the web 2.0 bubble

Enjoyed reading this post from socialmedian. Most amusingly he listed this as one of his reasons to get nervous about a web 2.0 bubble:

Disney announces today they will form a digital m&A group to make up to 20 Internet startup acquisitions in next 24 months, many outside of their core areas

There's always been a kind of slight disdain by the digital illuminati about perceived "old media" companies trying to catch up with any new digital trend.  Truth is, we're all in this together, helping to evolve the ways things are done.  Or to put it another way, all struggling to understand and trying to ride each wave as it emerges.

I like this.  This is exactly what's happening now.  It's not as if we're the spectators.  In fact we're never the spectators from day 1 when the internet was born.  Everybody is already in this together.  Those who act and those who don't act actually affects how the digital landscape's going to be.  And it may never be, because it's moving constantly like the ocean.

There had not been a time like this.  I was just talking to my dad, gave him some training on what's possible with googling stuff.  I told him I learned how to flush my kitchen sink online.  And taught him to find mattress reviews online before buying sealy.  There hasn't been a time in history where laymen like us can gain access to information all within 5 minutes.

Those who don't search stuff will lose.

Well...I must slightly defend Disney in stating that they've been in the digital business awhile - they bought a bunch of companies back in 1998, pre-bubble burst 1.0. You might have heard of them  - ESPN.com for one. And I think they had ABCNEWS.com by then. They've had the Buena Vista Internet Group and the Walt Disney Internet Group.

They may sound like 'old media', and they make the complete wrong choice in some of their acquisitions, but don't think they are newbies at this. They have been in the game for awhile.

To be sure, Disney certainly has a place at the table, but it is commonly agreed that they are not at the leading edge.  But that is the point: all players drive the evolution, not just the digital leaders.

Yeah, old guard meets new guard.

Either way, correct point in saying, we are in it all together.  The only difference is that the new way is going to eventually eliminate a lot of the old way.  Hopefully we all get to the finish line.  :)
